JENNIFER (PRESENTER): Hello, this is Jennifer Singer reporting for News Radio. Here are today’s top stories. Transport Minister Darren Chester has announced airlines flying to Australia from Middle Eastern airports will have increased security checks at the boarding gates. From next week, Passengers flying direct to Australia from Doha, Abu Dhabi and Dubai will be subject to random explosive trace detection (ETD) screening. Our reporter Belinda Palmada spoke with Mr Chester about the new security checks. Bel. (25 seconds)

JENNIFER: In other news, A Current Affair reporter Ben McCormack has been charged after he allegedly sent child abuse material and engaged in explicit conversations about children with another man online. The twenty-five year veteran was arrested on Thursday morning at his Sydney home and taken to a nearby police station after raids on the network’s office in Sydney. A Current Affair is assisting the police with the investigation. Nine’s news and current affairs director Darren Wick had this to say. (25 seconds)

(Sound clip) I can confirm that officers from the New South Wales police have been at TCN (Television Corporation Nine) this morning investigating matters relating to a staff member at A Current Affair. It’s a personal matter that does not relate to the program or Nine. We are co-operating with the police. But, we are not in a position to comment any further as this is an ongoing investigation. Police seizes computers, a mobile phone and electronic devices during the raids.  The Nine Network has suspended McCormack amid the allegations and will cover the story concerning him without fear of favour. McCormack has been granted bail. If convicted, he could face 15 years in jail. (15 seconds)

Former federal Speaker Bronwyn Bishop has repaid taxpayers nearly fourteen thousand dollars in travel expenses after being busted for using a chopper to fly from Melbourne to Geelong. The scandal forced Ms Bishop to resign as Speaker in August 2015 and her bid for preselection in last year’s federal election was unsuccessful. (19 seconds)

First Daughter Ivanka Trump will join her father President Donald Trump’s administration as an Assistant to the President. Like her husband, senior aide to the president Jared Kushner, Ivanka will not receive a salary for her work as a federal employee. (14 seconds)

Magician David Copperfield is being sued to reveal his secrets by a tourist who suffered brain damage from a stunt gone wrong. Gavin Cox was picked out of the audience as a participant for a disappearing act in the illusionist’s show at the MGM Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. Cox and other participating audience members were led by Copperfield’s assistants through a dark secret passageway as part of the stunt, and Cox tripped and fell on construction debris, slamming his head on the ground. Copperfield’s lawyer, Theodore Blumberg, told The Washington Post that the illusion at issue has been performed successfully for over fifteen years with over a hundred thousand audience participants.
